Step 1: Step Back

I will- But not now.

I, like other people in New York City, am always rushing to get somewhere. I love being fashionably late to something without ever questioning why. When I took a step back I saw a common theme in life- with fashion, my finances, media and just about every aspect of my life- I’m overexposed to information. Taking a step helped me zoom out and reevaluate my fashion choices.
If you think this is an easy way to let the competition win or take a step back is counterproductive but in reality, a step back can move you two steps further much faster. There is research saying information overload can negatively affect someone at an individual and an organizational level. Research by Shahrzadi et al. (2024) describes how it can also lead to poor-decision making skills with accuracy, quality and effectiveness.

But how does it apply to my fashion sense? Yes- I was waiting for you to ask. By consuming content all day- you can either become an expert or lose a sense of direction. Diversification of your portfolio isn’t so random after all. In your portfolio, there are different risk profiles, asset classes and even many different strategies- all of which comes from the information you consume. While information overload has a direction and isn’t just a random tiktok algorithm.

Hence, with Fashion I challenge you to do the same. Cut the excess, focus on the très cher and in order to do that, Take a step back. When you zoom out, you can clearly see if your fashion choices are aligned with your interests or others’? I’m not saying don’t explore (read: Très Cher or Très Scared?) – I’m saying just like your diversified stock portfolio, calculate your fashion portfolio and avoid fashion faux pas! I also urge you to Contact us! and share your fashion & finance take.
