Do you always look at your own reflection when you pass by a mirror? I caught myself doing that today—it was a pivotal moment.
I thought about how various different people look at themselves—are they avoiding, are they fixing their appearance, or are they smiling? It makes me think of how every time I meet a new person, they act as a reflective surface for myself. I am either avoiding them, fixing myself/improving, or just smiling. I can assure you it has more to say about myself than them. Here’s how.
If I run into someone who makes me smile when I meet them, it is because first, they make me feel good in their company. I like the person I am with them. I am indeed smiling, and funny enough, the reflection smiles back.
If I run into someone who makes me fix myself when I meet them, it is because they are inspiring me to make a positive change in my own life. Every time I hang out, it is a good reminder that I need to make improvements in my life. The reflection doesn’t necessarily fix itself, but I for sure am.
If I run into someone who makes me frown or avoid, it could be because I can do absolutely nothing about my position and nothing they do could make me. I think this type of person is somewhat necessary to meet from time to time. This person makes me realize that I’m avoiding and feel uncomfortable making a change. This person could possibly be the best person, yet something about me resurfaces that I have been avoiding. I believe that when I meet them, I need to brace myself for a change that was long overdue.
The first two types of people are very inspiring and motivating, and they are the type of people I usually run into. The third type is a real mirror. It is showing my flaws, my limits, my shortcomings. I think encountering people like that can be pivotal—that’s if you’re ready for a change.
I almost never want to run into people like that, but I know that it is very, very important for me. It’s character development in the making. I hope you run into people like that at least once in your life.
Good luck to meet the new you.
